JVS Toronto empowers people from diverse backgrounds and communities to achieve their employment potential and partners with employers to develop a strong and inclusive workforce. One of the ways we do this is through hiring events.
In this article, we will dive into two of our most asked about event—job fairs and pre-screening events—and unpack some of their similarities and differences.
What is a Job Fair?
A job fair is a large-scale recruitment event with one or more employers. They give attendees the opportunity to network with employers, learn about available positions, and apply for current vacancies. Due to the large scale of job fairs, attendees can explore a wide variety of opportunities from several different employers. Jobs fairs may be general or specific to one industry, such as healthcare, finance, or IT.
How do I prepare for a Job Fair?
To prepare for a job fair, you should research the employers who will be at the event ahead of time. Think about the types of roles that interest you and prepare questions for the employers you would like to speak to. You should also print copies of an up-to-date resume to give to the employers of your choice.
I attended a recent job fair where I spoke to representatives from two companies. Within a week, I was interviewed and offered a great job. I am truly grateful to JVS for creating such an impactful event that connects job seekers with real opportunities.
What is a Pre-Screening Event?
A pre-screening event also helps connect job seekers with employers, but does so with more specificity. Workforce Specialists (WFSs) advertise existing job opportunities and, on the day of the event, screen attendees based on the employers’ requirements. There are no employers present during these events, but if the WFS team finds a candidate suitable, they are referred to the employer for the next steps of the hiring process.
How can I attend a Pre-Screening Event?
To attend a pre-screening event, you must meet the minimum requirements of one of the available roles. If eligible, you may be considered for multiple roles. Pre-screenings are only open to existing JVS Toronto clients, but Employment Counsellors are available during pre-screening events to complete intake for new clients.
I decided to attend the event, and I must commend the team for their exceptional organization and warm professionalism. We had a brief but engaging conversation about a role that aligned with my experience and skills. I was encouraged to apply, and within 2 weeks, I was interviewed and offered the job.
To Summarize
Overall, job fairs allow attendees to explore a wide range of opportunities with one or more employers, while pre-screening events connect attendees with specific job opportunities developed by the WFS team.
